10 Smart Tips to Save on Airport Car Rentals

Airport rental car costs have crept up sharply in the last few years. Here are 10 ways to fight back.

1. Skip the airport, save 20–30%. Off-airport locations don't carry the "concession recovery fee" (often 10–12% of the base rate) plus various airport surcharges.
2. Book early — and rebook. Most US rental rates are not pre-paid. Book the best rate today and re-quote 1–2 times a week until pickup; cancel and re-book if it drops.
3. Use Costco Travel, AAA, or Hertz Gold/Avis Preferred discount codes. These three regularly produce the lowest rates on standard rentals.
4. Decline the CDW/LDW if your credit card covers it. Most premium travel cards (Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum, Capital One Venture X) offer primary or secondary rental coverage. Read your benefits guide before declining.
5. Decline supplemental liability insurance if you carry a personal auto policy with liability limits — your own coverage usually extends to rentals in the US.
6. Refuse the fuel pre-pay scam. The "convenience" pre-pay rate is rarely cheaper than topping up at a gas station near the airport.
7. Skip the toll transponder. Most rentals charge $5–$10/day flat for the transponder. If you're only using toll roads briefly, it's cheaper to pay cash or use a personal account.
8. Watch the time of pickup. Most US rentals are 24-hour windows; returning 30 minutes late triggers a full extra day. If you'll be late, call ahead to extend.
9. Inspect and photograph the car before leaving the lot. Every panel, every wheel, the windshield. Email yourself the photos for a timestamp.
10. One-way fees can be hundreds of dollars. If you must do a one-way, check Enterprise/National first — they often have the lowest drop fees in the US.
