If you lose your ID at the airport, TSA can still let you fly through their Identity Verification Process: arrive 3 hours early, bring 2 alternate documents (credit card + Costco card + insurance card + work ID work fine), answer database questions, expect 30-60 min extra screening. As of Feb 2026, the $45 Confirm.ID program is now the primary alternative.
You're at the airport. Your wallet is gone. Your ID is gone. Can you still fly? Yes — TSA has a process. Here's exactly what to do.
The Short Answer
You can still fly without ID, but expect 30-60 minutes of extra screening and possible fees. Arrive 3 hours before your flight.
What to Bring as Backup ID
Any combination of these helps TSA verify your identity:
- Credit cards with your name embossed
- Costco or other membership card with photo
- Health insurance card
- Work badge with photo
- Student ID with photo
- Library card
- Mail addressed to you (bills, bank statements)
- Birth certificate (if you have a digital copy in email)
- Old expired ID (TSA may still accept)
Step-by-Step Process
- Arrive 3 hours early. Identity verification adds 30-60 minutes.
- Go to TSA checkpoint and tell them you lost your ID.
- Provide your information: name, address, date of birth, recent addresses.
- Answer database questions. TSA pulls public records (mortgage info, vehicle registration, etc.) and asks you to confirm.
- Pay $45 for Confirm.ID if you have no acceptable backup documents (started Feb 2026).
- Proceed through enhanced screening — pat-down, full bag search.
- Get to your gate.
What Doesn't Work
- Photo of your ID on your phone — not accepted
- Driver's license app on your phone — only accepted in a few states
- Asking the airline counter to vouch for you — they can't
If You Have Time Before the Flight
- Stop at a 24-hour DMV (some metros have them) for a replacement
- Use a digital passport renewal app if your passport was lost (online emergency renewal)
- Have a family member text you photos of your documents
Prevention
- Keep your passport in a separate bag from your wallet
- Photo all your IDs and email them to yourself
- Get a passport card ($30) as backup for your driver's license
- Apply for Global Entry — TSA accepts the card without a license
